Flatbasset Radio: Episode #82 (Aesop Rock MegaMix)

Get bit by the hound...

Well hello again, podcast fans! Welcome to an extra special episode of Flatbasset Radio.

If you've been following along with the podcast over the years (and really, why wouldn't you), you know that I'm a huge fan of Aesop Rock. In this crazy internet world where we're able to build our own culture around our own taste, Aes looms as the greatest rapper whoever rapped. To try to drive that point home I've been playing him on the podcast pretty consistently since the beginning of the podcast. Hell, I even named his Labor Days album to the inaugural Flatbasset Radio American Album Hall Of Fame class.

Why do I bring this up? Because Aesop Rock is out on tour in support of The Impossible Kid and that tour's pulling into your favorite danceteria & mine, First Ave., tomorrow night. That's right, kids, Aesop, Rob Sonic, Homeboy Sandman, DJ Zone, & Dem Atlas all under one roof for the low, low price of $20.

To celebrate the show I decided to dedicate this week's episode of Flatbasset Radio entirely to Aesop Rock.

Well.... not entirely.

As you can see from the tracklist below this isn't merely a "Best Of..." collection. I did my best to try to include a lot of collaborations, some semi-lost tracks, & some maybe-lesser-known remixes. Hell, I even chopped up his excellent The Blob beat tape for some interludes. Obviously I'm a biased opinion, but I'm going to go ahead and say that this is easily the best thing that's ever been uploaded to the internet. Also, it's free. So, y'know, give it a listen.

I've finally set up a decent downloading site, so if you'd like to download Flatbasset Radio: Episode #82 (Aesop Rock MegaMix) (with all the appropriate iTunes tagging), just click here.

If you don't have the time or desire to download the show, just click the Mixcloud player below and you're good to go.

Flatbasset Radio's 25 Most Played Albums: February '16

Well hello again, everybody. Welcome to another month's worth of instant nostalgia!

Even with a bonus day February flew by. I'm sorry that the posts haven't been too routine. I was very busy and very tired, but I'm trying my best here. Of course, big thank you to everybody who did make the time to check out the couple of Flatbasset Radio episodes I put together this month as well as that P.O.S. MinneClassics show.

The flipside of being so busy means that I likely spent a lot of time on public transit, which means I was able to listen to a ton of music. As you can see below, I covered a lot of ground.

As always, please remember that one song = one play. If I listen to, say, Springsteen's The River once all the way through, it counts as 20 plays. These stats are all pulled from my Last.fm page, which you should definitely follow if you're certain you've checked out absolutely everything else on the internet.

So, without further ado, here's Flatbasset Radio's 25 Most Played Albums Of February, 2016:

01. Edison - The Hand (79 plays)

02. Mixed Blood Majority - Insane World (77 plays)

03. Doks Robotiks - Doks (70 plays)

04. Bruce Springsteen - The River (61 plays)

05. Paul Westerberg - 14 Songs (42 plays)

06. Vandaam - VNDM EP 2 (42 plays)

07. J Dilla - Donuts (32 plays)

08. The Hang Ups - Pretend Hits (32 plays)

09. Local H - Pack Up The Cats (30 plays)

10. Belle & Sebastian - The Life Pursuit (29 plays)

11. Operation Ivy - Operation Ivy (27 plays)

12. Fountains Of Wayne - Sky Full Of Holes (26 plays)

13. The Lemonheads - Car Button Cloth (24 plays)

14. The Specials - More Specials (24 plays)

15. Sparta - Threes (24 plays)

16. Morrissey - World Peace Is None Of Your Business (24 plays)

17. Collage - Lollygag (21 plays)*

18. Neil Young - Harvest (20 plays)

19. The Hold Steady - Heaven Is Whenever (20 plays)

20. Desmond Dekker - Rockin' Steady: The Best Of Desmond Dekker (20 plays)

21. Shad - When This Is Over (20 plays)

22. Eric Mayson - Detail (19 plays)

23. Sayth & North House - Body Pillow (18 plays)

24. The Cure - Greatest Hits (18 plays)

25. Radiohead - In Rainbows (Bonus Disc) (16 plays)

*That blank spot you see is for an album called Lollygag by a local artist called Collage. Does anybody know anything about this band or album? I bought it on a whim over at Cheapo. There does not appear to be any information about it whatsoever on the internet. All I can gather from the album is that it was released in 1994 on Gypsy Gyrl records. It seems to be the project/brainchild of a woman named Terry Blessing. That's actually quite a bit of info, but if anybody knows anymore about it or maybe saw this band back in the 90's, please hit me up in the comment section or over on the Flatbasset Facebook page. Thanks.

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #74

See, I know my destination, but I'm just not there...

Well hello again, podcast fans! Welcome to Flatbasset Radio: Episode #74!

Happy Leap Day, everybody! In honor of this rare, yet scheduled phenomena I figured I should get my shit together and make the most of this bonus day by sitting on my ass recording a new show. Mission: Accomplished.

In this week's episode I celebrate some anniversaries, play some new local music, check in on some old Bay Area friends, lament the lack of respect for Owatonna's greatest songwriter, the sadness running through a classic beat album, revisit a single that was supposed to break one of America's great punk bands, struggle with my accents, fawn over my favorite rapper, and get unreasonably excited about my first trip to see The Boss live! All that plus the Cover Of The Week & Flatbasset Flatclassic!

As always, Flatbasset Radio is completely free. I've finally set up a decent downloading site, so if you'd like to download Flatbasset Radio: Episode #74 (with all the appropriate iTunes tagging), just click here.

If you don't have the time or desire to download the show, just click the Mixcloud player below and you're good to go.

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #64 (Young Sandwich's Summer Mix Pt. 2)

Take me out beyond the stress...

I told you we'd be back!

That's right, Pt. 2 of Young Sandwich's Summer Mix is here.  I won't bore you with all the details of how this mix came to be (scroll down a post for all of that).

Pt. 2 picks up right where Pt. 1 left off, but it definitely has a few more left turns than yesterday's show.  Think of it as the indulgent Side B to yesterday's more immediate Side A. Nick & I put together a second half that takes some long detours into funk, latino prog-rock, NY hip-hop, local R&B, alt-country, pop-punk, and a whole host of other classic stuff.  If you dug the first half of the Summer Mix than this is the perfect complement.

As always, Flatbasset Radio is completely free. Just click the Mixcloud player below and you're good to go.

02. Coleman Hawkins - Heart And Soul
03. Thievery Corporation - Culture Of Fear (w/Mr. Lif)

If you've been following the blog for a while you should already be pretty familiar with Edison.  I've written about him several times here and played him several times on the Flatbasset Radio podcast.  I wrote about his last album, No Sun No Food, last July when it was also an Album Of The Week.  The album was so great that it eventually took the crows as my most played album of 2013.

If you haven't been following along, here's the bullet points.  Edison is a beatmaker out of the Bay Area.  Up until No Sun No Food he was known for making beats that were dense, manic, and yet still melodic.  He switched up the game last year on No Sun No Food, making an exquisitely laid back album that was still clearly the work of the same artists.

So here we have No Three Men Make A Tiger.  I've only listened to it a couple of times, but I think it's safe to say that this is a middle ground between his manic earlier work and his new found sense of pacing.  It's a much harder, busier album than No Sun No Food, yet it no longer feels quite as busy.  Where his early albums felt like you were riding around in a taxi who's driver was mixing adderall & vodka, No Three Men Make A Tiger is a great strolling record.  No Sun No Food was a great strolling album as well, but that album felt like a summer stroll through the park.  No Three Men... has a darker edge to it.  Like strolling through that same park at 3 AM as a storm's blowing in to town.  Obviously I highly recommend it.

If you'd like to check it out it's available as a "Name Your Price" download on Edison's Bandcamp page.  Seriously, pick it up. Pick up No Sun No Food while you're at it.  And then, once you've grabbed those, follow this link to 900 Bats and pick up the Free Willy beat tape.  Then you'll be set for summer.

Newest Industry Presents: Flatbasset Radio - Episode #26 (Best Of 2013!)

(THIS POST ORIGINALLY APPEARS ON THE TWIN CITIES BLOG NEWEST INDUSTRY)

I'll keep playing back these fragments of time...

Hello again, free music fans! Welcome to Flatbasset Radio: Episode #26!

For those of you who are unaware of the Flatbasset Radio format, here's what you're looking at: TCDroogsma is our resident MP3 junkie. As you've probably noticed in his Songs Of The Week column, he's not always the most positive music fan. In an effort to prove that he is, in fact, a fan of music, we give him an hour each week to play the songs he's digging and talk a little bit about them. Once he's recorded his podcast we put it right here on the website for free to stream!

In this week's episode Droogsy celebrates some of his favorite records of 2013, admits to being years behind in his apps, give his sponsor their money worth, is confounded by gender reversals in his Cover Of The Week, attempts to redefine "success" for musicians, gives us his slogan for the year, defends a genius' ego (or an egoists' genius), and gives us his theory as to why everybody thought 2013 was terrible!

You can download the podcast for free by clicking the episode's title or stream the episode by clicking on the Mixcloud player below.

Album Of The Week: July 15-July 21, 2003

My Album Of The Week for the week of July 15th-July 21st, 2013:

Edison – No Sun No Food

For those of you unfamiliar with Edison, he's a producer out of San Francisco. His previous records were filled with busy, percussion heavy beats that seemed to thrive on a this-could-go-off-the-rails-at-any-point energy.

I first found out about Edison via Aesop Rock's blog 900 Bats. Edison posted a handful of roughly half-hour-long beat tapes to the blog and gave them away for free (his Free Willy tape is a stone cold classic in my book). Those tapes tended to swing between very energetic, hook heavy moments and slow-burn sections seamlessly. They're the kind of tapes that are perfect for walking around while the snow falls.

Anyway, hopefully most people here in the Twin Cities know Edison from the split EP he did with Lazerbeak titled Kill Switch. In fact, give this video for “A Cure For A Case Of The Wealthies” for a good example of what Edison sounds like:

Now, the reason I'm excited to spend a week with No Sun No Food is that on this album Edison completely stayed away from the faster, busier moments and focused solely on the slower & moodier side of his sound. I hate to use the term “downbeat” to describe No Sun No Food, because it's not a depressing record by any stretch. If anything, it's just a more relaxed, content version of Edison's sound. It's a laid-back, summertime album.

There aren't a lot of artists that can change up their sound and end up with an album that stands up on its own. Some of my favorite (and therefore best) artists have tried and failed, ending up with albums that stand up only from a, “Huh, isn't this curious?” perspective. No Sun No Food has a lot more going for it than that “Huh?” response.

Anyway, Edison posted it on his Bandcamp page as a Pay-What-You-Want and I strongly suggest that you head over and grab a copy. Perfect “Summer Of 2013” type of record.
