Flatbasset Radio's 25 Most Played Albums: July '18

That's right, everybody, another sweaty month is in the books, which means it's time for a hit of instant nostalgia. Here's Flatbasset Radio's 25 Most Played Albums of July '18.

Before I get to the list - Huge thanks to everybody who checked out the podcast this month. I know I thank you every month, but I mean it every time. The Canada Day show and the Flatbasst Radio American Album Hall Of Fame are two of my favorite shows to do each year, so I'm glad people checked them out.

Alright, let's get to the thing.

As always, one "play" equals one song. For example, the new Roma Di Luna album has 9 songs on it, so each time I listen to it front to back it counts as nine "plays." As usual, all stats come from my Last.FM page. Give it a follow if you really want to stay up on what's getting the most plays.

01. Dere Moans - Future Deli (84 plays)

02. Catbath - Glitterbox (70 plays)

03. Beastie Boys - Hello Nasty (68 plays)

04. Sloan - Navy Blues (65 plays)

05. Doomtree - Doomtree (64 plays)

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #112

Thanks for listening, thanks for understanding...

Well hello again, music fans. Welcome to Flatbasset Radio: Episode #112!

It's the last show of 2017, everybody and I, for one, couldn't be happier. 2017 was a trash can fire. Will 2018 be better? I don't know. What am I, Kreskin? I hope so, but I'm a practical man, so I'm sure not counting on it.

The one thing I can say with some certainty: This is an outstanding episode of Flatbasset Radio!

(Second thing I can say with some certainty: I am not great at segues.)

Anyway, continuing a theme from last week's episode, I'm making up for some lost time with this one. Over the course of 2017 I slept/worked/moped my way through too many weeks without putting together a show and, as such, I missed a bunch of classic anniversaries. I'm rectifying that here on Ep. #112. A semi-forgotten hip-hop classic, an old demo by a fallen power-pop god , TWO 50th anniversary classics, my favorite post-makeout-stroll album of 1997, the most perfect power-pop song ever written, some weirdo 70's instrumental stuff, one of the great forgotten punk bands of the 90's... all of these things make an appearance on this week's show (as well as a new one from the Twin Cities' favorite ex-pats). All that plus the Cover Of The Week & the Flatbasset Flatclassic.

As always, Flatbasset Radio is completely free. I've finally set up a decent downloading site, so if you'd like to download Flatbasset Radio: Episode #112 (with all the appropriate iTunes tagging), just click here.

If you don't have the time or desire to download the show, just click the Mixcloud player below and you're good to go.

Here's how Episode #112 plays out:

01. The Hold Steady - Entitlement Crew

02. Lupe Fiasco - Hip-Hop Saved My Life

03. The Beatles - Flying

04. Nirvana - Son Of A Gun

05. Rivers Cuomo - Chess

06. David Bowie - Moss Garden

07. R.E.M. - Nightswimming

08. Buffalo Springfield - Rock & Roll Woman

09. Wretch Like Me - Hello Hollywood, This Is David

10. Green Day - Last Ride In

11. Sugar - If I Can't Change Your Mind

12. The Smiths - I Won't Share You

There you have it. See you in hell, 2017!

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #104 (American Album Hall Of Fame - Class Of 2017)

Never had to knock on wood...

Well hello again, everybody! Welcome to Flatbasset Radio: Episode #104!

Folks, on Saturday we celebrated some of the finest work coming from our brothers & sisters in the Great White North. Now, I may be a few days late, however, it was just America's birthday which means it's time for my favorite episode of the year. That's right, it's time to induct six new albums into the Flatbasset Radio American Album Hall Of Fame.

Before we get to this year's inductees, let me bombard you with some links to the previous induction ceremonies:

Class Of 2015 (Part I)
Class Of 2015 (Part II)
Class Of 2016 (Part I)
Class Of 2016 (Part II)

Unlike last year's class, which skewed a bit toward Minnesota, this year's class is a celebration of the East Coast. In fact, with the exception of a nod to Boston, the majority of these artists are as ingrained in New York City culture & history as Central Park, Madison Square Garden, criminally underrated bagels, & brutally-overrated pizza.

Before we get to the albums, though, here's a quick reminder of the FRAAHOF's criteria:

01. An album must be at least 10 years old to be inducted into the FRAAHOF

02. Only 6 albums per year may be inducted

03. Only 2 of those 6 albums may have been released over 30 years ago

04. No artist can appear in consecutive years

So, with those criteria in mind, here's a look at this year's inductees:

Hell of a class, no? As per usual, I'll be playing three songs off each of the albums being inducted and talk for far too long about each of them. Sound good? Well, too bad, you get what you pay for.

So, now that you know, here's what the Flatbasset Radio American Album Hall Of Fame looks like as of today:

Alright, let's get to the show.

As always, Flatbasset Radio is completely free. I've finally set up a decent downloading site, so if you'd like to download Flatbasset Radio: Episode #104 (with all the appropriate iTunes tagging), click here for Part 1 & here for Part 2.

Now, let's get to it:

01. Party Pit
02. First Night
03. Stuck Between Stations

04. The Rascal King
05. Another Drinkin' Song
06. The Impression That I Get

07. Peg
08. Deacon Blues
09. Josie

And Part 2 of the Class Of 2017:

01. Someone Great
02. North American Scum
03. All My Friends

04. Tasmanian Pain Coaster (w/The Mars Volta)
05. EMG
06. Poisenville Kids No Wins (w/Cat Power)

07. Waiting For The Man
08. Femme Fatale
09. Sunday Morning

There you have it, folks. Congratulations to this year's inductees. Thanks for stopping by!

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #59

Lord, to be thirty-three forever...

Well hello again, podcast fans.  Welcome to Episode #59 of Flatbasset Radio!

Sorry it's been a minute since I posted a new show.  I've been working very hard at things that aren't this blog & podcast.  It's good for me but maybe not so good for you.  I'm a very selfish man.

Anyway, show's back and June's shaping up to be a great month for the podcast so let's start it here.

In this week's episode I begin by apologizing for such a sleepy, sleepy guy before discussing the definition of "surf noir," the pros & cons of the Kent State shooting on its 45th anniversary, the moment Danger Mouse cemented his legacy, coming to terms with Pink Floyd, just what happens when you spend 40 hours per week with somebody, my unequivocal, errr... tolerance for Johnny Marr's solo career, and the real moment Craig Finn let go of Lifter Puller.  All that plus some anniversaries, the Cover Of The Week, the Flatbasset Flatclassic, and all the bro-mance one man can muster!

As always, Flatbasset Radio is completely free. Just click the Mixcloud player below and you're good to go.

01. Murder Shoes - Charlotte Manning
02. Gorillaz - Kids With Guns
03. The Dandy Warhols - Ohio
04. Wu-Tang Clan - Tearz
05. Pink Floyd - Pigs (Three Different Ones)
06. Los Campesinos! - Avocado, Baby
07. Johnny Marr - The Trap
08. Sims - 15 Blocks (Lazerbeak Remix)
09. Wild Ones - Golden Twin
10. The Hold Steady - Stevie Nix

Enjoy!

Newest Industry Presents - Flatbasset Radio: Episode #31

(THIS POST ORIGINALLY APPEARS ON THE TWIN CITIES BLOG NEWEST INDUSTRY)

Do you have the time to listen to me whine?

Hello again, free music fans! Welcome to Flatbasset Radio: Episode #31!

For those of you who are unaware of the Flatbasset Radio format, here's what you're looking at: TCDroogsma is our resident MP3 junkie. As you've probably noticed in his Songs Of The Week column, he's not always the most positive music fan. In an effort to prove that he is, in fact, a fan of music, we give him an hour each week to play the songs he's digging and talk a little bit about them. Once he's recorded his podcast we put it right here on the website for free to stream and/or download!

In this week's episode TCDroogsma is flying solo from Planet New Basset.  He spends the week celebrating the anniversaries of several of his favorite albums, uses one of his theories on life to justify playing U2, tells Beyonce to "put it away for a while," concedes to being years late to one of the 2000's great bands, does his best not to get sued, gets "super pumped" for the new Hold Steady album (while firing shots at their tour itinerary), discusses the roots of Kanye's controversy-filled career, misreads song titles, can't figure out how old he was 20 years ago, discusses three albums that shaped "music kids" in 1994, explains just how he spent ten years in a "punk rock wormhole," and plays the song that sent him on the path to music nerd-dom!

You can download the podcast for free by clicking the episode's title or stream the episode by clicking on the Mixcloud player below.

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #31

Newest Industry Presents: Flatbasset Radio - Episode #5

(THIS POST ORIGINALLY APPEARS ON THE TWIN CITIES BLOG NEWEST INDUSTRY.)

This was my dream... playing a rockin' routine...

Well hello again, music fans!  TCDroogsma is back with Flatbasset Radio - Episode #5!

For those of you stopping by for the first time, TCDroogsma is one of our regular contributors.  He typically sticks to the twin indulgences of food and music.  Each week we have him put together a podcast of roughly an hour's worth of music broken up sporadically by his nasally banter.

As you can see, Tuesday night is now going to be the new home of the podcast.  We realize that this puts Flatbasset Radio up against Tuesdays With Lazerbeak and Tuesday Morning Quarterback.  We're hoping that you'll soon consider Flatbasset Radio in the same breath as those two internet institutions.  Call it the Tuesday Hat Trick.

Anyway, this week found TCDroogsma in a rather sour mood.  Fortunately he managed to talk himself back into a better place by leaning on loud guitars, hometown jams, asian women, Twin Cities ex-pats, yet another stroll back to the 90's, and a Minneapolis icon.  Click the embedded player to have a listen or click the title to download the podcast and take it on the go.

Flatbasset Radio - Episode #5

Here's how the podcast breaks down:

01. Deerhoof - Milk Man
02. Kudzu Wish - We've Got Big Hands
03. DJ Abilities - Kastdaddy 4 President
04. BNLX - 1929
05. The Hold Steady - Magazines
06. Yak Ballz - Gas Galaxy
07. Menahan Street Band - The Crossing
08. Superdrag - Sucked Out
09. Murs - Eazy-E
10. Longwave - No Direction
11. Depeche Mode - Waiting For The Night
12. Paul Westerberg - All That I Had

There you have it, everybody!  Give it a listen!  Download it!  Free music!  Tweet it!  Tell a friend!

For more of the kind of emo TCDroogsma he can be found on Twitter (@TCDroogsma).  He also maintains his own Flatbasset blog, though it mainly consists of the work he does here.  If you ever meet him in person don't let his beard throw you off, he's not a handsome man.
Of course Newest Industry also lives on Twitter (@NewestIndustry1).  Give that a follow to stay up on all the work being done by our contributors.  More importantly we also have a Facebook page. Stopping by and giving us a "like" is the best way to support this blog without any sort of financial obligation.  If we get to 50 likes we're going to make TCDroogsma shave his beard.
