Flatbasset Radio: Episode #119

You can see the shadows wandering off somewhere...

Well hello again, everybody! Welcome to Flatbasset Radio: Episode #119!

Oh my goodness, folks, it's been a minute. How have you been? Feeling alright? It's spring, the sun is shining, St. Patrick's Day is behind us, Facebook is crumbling... What a time to be alive, right?

Anyway, sorry I was away for a few weeks. At this point you know my litany of excuses better than I do so I won't bother rehashing them here. Let's just get to the show.

On this week's episode I've got all kinds of sweet, sweet jams for you. We begin what I'm sure will be a rich & rewarding journey into the Father/Daughter Records catalog, check in with one of the Twin Cities longest-running indie rockers, here some Denver Rap, catch a warm weather jam (in the name of spring), revisit one of the best debut albums by a Twin Cities band of the last 20 years, celebrate a few anniversaries, take a dive into Nate's Archives, take a trip in the old Minnesota Way-Back Machine, and mark the 20th anniversary of a link in the chain that is quintessentially American power-pop. It's a hell of a show, folks.

As always, Flatbasset Radio is completely free. I've finally set up a decent downloading site, so if you'd like to download Flatbasset Radio: Episode #119 (with all the appropriate iTunes tagging), just click here.

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #82 (Aesop Rock MegaMix)

Get bit by the hound...

Well hello again, podcast fans! Welcome to an extra special episode of Flatbasset Radio.

If you've been following along with the podcast over the years (and really, why wouldn't you), you know that I'm a huge fan of Aesop Rock. In this crazy internet world where we're able to build our own culture around our own taste, Aes looms as the greatest rapper whoever rapped. To try to drive that point home I've been playing him on the podcast pretty consistently since the beginning of the podcast. Hell, I even named his Labor Days album to the inaugural Flatbasset Radio American Album Hall Of Fame class.

Why do I bring this up? Because Aesop Rock is out on tour in support of The Impossible Kid and that tour's pulling into your favorite danceteria & mine, First Ave., tomorrow night. That's right, kids, Aesop, Rob Sonic, Homeboy Sandman, DJ Zone, & Dem Atlas all under one roof for the low, low price of $20.

To celebrate the show I decided to dedicate this week's episode of Flatbasset Radio entirely to Aesop Rock.

Well.... not entirely.

As you can see from the tracklist below this isn't merely a "Best Of..." collection. I did my best to try to include a lot of collaborations, some semi-lost tracks, & some maybe-lesser-known remixes. Hell, I even chopped up his excellent The Blob beat tape for some interludes. Obviously I'm a biased opinion, but I'm going to go ahead and say that this is easily the best thing that's ever been uploaded to the internet. Also, it's free. So, y'know, give it a listen.

I've finally set up a decent downloading site, so if you'd like to download Flatbasset Radio: Episode #82 (Aesop Rock MegaMix) (with all the appropriate iTunes tagging), just click here.

If you don't have the time or desire to download the show, just click the Mixcloud player below and you're good to go.

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #62

I'd do the same if I had the chance, cheat the system, rig the race...

Well hello again, podcast fans! Welcome to Flatbasset Radio: Episode #62!

Thanks for stopping by.  It's been a little while since I did a show where I just straight up played jams so I'm back to the old format for this one: just summer jams and banter for your ears.

Sadly, I'm still flying solo on this one, which means plenty of nasally commentary.  I discuss the tornado that may or may not have rolled through Minneapolis, a new "American Standard," the common ground between Frank Black & Bob Dylan, & the absolute greatest summer jam in the history of summer jams.  I revisit a couple of Flatbasset's Album Of The Week bands, sing the praises of one of the pillars of the Twin Cities hip-hop scene, get nostalgic over one of the great punk rock record labels of all-time, and struggle to connect old episodes of Seinfeld to Canadian hip-hop.  All that plus I celebrate some anniversaries, play my Cover Of The Week, and celebrate one of the most classic of Flatbasset Flatclassics!

As always, Flatbasset Radio is completely free. Just click the Mixcloud player below and you're good to go.

01. Plums - Parking Lots
02. Holly Miranda - Waves
03. Blueprint - Boombox
04. Frank Black - The Dark End Of The Street
05. Edger - Holy Armour
06. Andrew Broder / Crescent Moon - Palms Up
07. What Tyrants - Dancehall No. 2
08. Sugar Ray - Fly
09. The Potatomen - Sam's Song
10. Felt - Morris Day
11. Lee Ranaldo - Off The Wall
12. Buck 65 - Blood Of A Young Wolf

There you go, everybody!  Thanks for stopping by for some jams!

Newest Industry Presents - Flatbasset Radio: Episode #35

(THIS POST ORIGINALLY APPEARS ON THE TWIN CITIES BLOG NEWEST INDUSTRY)

Yeah, I called you fat, look at me I'm skinny...

Hello again, free music fans! Welcome to Flatbasset Radio: Episode #35!

For those of you who are unaware of the Flatbasset Radio format, here's what you're looking at: TCDroogsma is our resident MP3 junkie. As you've probably noticed in his Songs Of The Week column, he's not always the most positive music fan. In an effort to prove that he is, in fact, a fan of music, we give him an hour each week to play the songs he's digging and talk a little bit about them. Once he's recorded his podcast we put it right here on the website for free to stream and/or download!

In this week's episode TCDroogsma is flying solo from Planet New Basset yet again.  In the process of trying to get his podcast game "back on track" he's feeling extra "saucy" because of the warm weather, celebrating the anniversary of one of independent hip-hop's great albums, buying CD's on Amazon for a penny, lamenting the 20 year anniversary of a generational icon, celebrating Rex Manning Day, anticipates a summer of Rhymesayers, finds himself coming around on a couple artists he didn't care for, (yet again) mispronounces a band's name, explains why St. Vincent is one of his "desert island" artists, vows to get MinneSarah back into the fold for next week's show, and discusses the song that best embodies old Modest Mouse & new Modest Mouse!

You can download the podcast for free by clicking the episode's title or stream the episode by clicking on the Mixcloud player below.
