Flatbasset Radio: Episode #124

I can't take it, take it, take it no more...

Well hello again, everybody. Welcome to Flatbasset Radio: Episode #124!

It's a gorgeous Sunday here in Minneapolis. The sun is shining, birds are singing, bees are trying to have sex with them - as I'm led to believe - and I've got a brand new batch of jams lined up for you.

On this week's show we'll spotlight some upcoming shows, begin our deep dive into the Disposable America catalog, listen to some new local pop, some old local (lo-fi) pop, mark some anniversaries, listen to some pub rock, marvel at the adaptability of Bob Dylan's catalog, and revisit some of my favorite albums of my youth. All that plus the Cover Of The Week, a deep dive into Nate's Archives, take a trip in the Minnesota Way-Back Machine, and another local Flatbasset Flatclassic.

As always, Flatbasset Radio is completely free. I've finally set up a decent downloading site, so if you'd like to download Flatbasset Radio: Episode #124 (with all the appropriate iTunes tagging), just click here.

Here's how Ep. #124 plays out:

01. Maura - Method Actor

Flatbasset Radio's 25 Most Played Albums: April '18

Well hello again, everybody! Welcome another installment of Album Collage Monthly!

You know what they say about April - in like a frozen tundra of depression, out like a sweaty mess of depression! Nah, I kid. I hope April was good to you. It was pretty good to me. Very big thanks to everybody who stopped by the blog or checked out the show this month. I was able to crank out for new episodes of the podcast and crank out Flatbasset's first ever interview.

(Special Paragraph Break - Exceptionally big thanks to Jeremy Warden of Double Grave for working with me on that interview. Like an idiot I'd been debating reaching out for an interview for a month but my nerves got the best of me. When I finally did reach out we had to work it out on a super tight deadline and Jeremy definitely went above and beyond in finding time to answer my questions. Definitely appreciated. Go get their new EP. It's flame emoji.)

Alright, back to this thing.

As always, one "play" equals one song. For example, the new Niiice. album has 10 songs on it, so each time I listen to it front to back it counts as ten "plays." As usual, all stats come from my Last.FM page. Give it a follow if you really want to stay up on what's getting the most plays.

Flatbasset Radio's 25 Most Played Albums: September '16

Well hello again, folks. It's the first of the the month, which means it's time for a little instant nostalgia.

Incredibly, September's already in the rearview mirror. It was a compelling month of presidential debates, undefeated Vikings, and Minnesota Wild preseason games. Sadly, it was also a month that only featured one Flatbasset Radio show. Sorry about that. For what it's worth, though, it was a 20 song, hour long mix of nothing but local music. As always, a big thanks to everybody who gave it a listen. Also, big thanks to all the artists & listeners who shared the show. You folks are literally my only promotional department, so I appreciate each of those shares.

Let's get to the collage. As always, remember that every song listened to counts as a "play." Seems obvious, right? So, for example, that new Total Gaze album We Need More Condos has 11 songs, meaning each time I listen to it all the way through it counts 11 "plays." As usual, all stats come from my Last.FM page. Give it a follow if you really want to stay up on what's getting the most plays around Planet New Basset.

So, here we go:

01. Graveyard Club - Cellar Door (79 plays)

02. Atmosphere - Fishing Blues (72 plays)

03. The Pooches - The Pooches (70 plays)

04. Total Gaze - We Need More Condos (70 plays)

05. Cruel Love - CRUELLOVE/RECORDPORN (50 plays)

06. Polara - Polara (34 plays)

07. The Beatles - Abbey Road (33 plays)

08. Young Scum - Autumn August (33 plays)

09. Various Artists - Beat Oven (Vol. 1) (33 plays)

10. R.E.M. - In Time: The Best Of R.E.M. 1988-2003 (30 plays)

11. Wretch Like Me - Calling All Cars (28 plays)

16. The Plastic Constellations - We Appreciate You (24 plays)

17. Radiohead - Amnesiac (23 plays)

18. BNLX - BNLX (22 plays)

19. Steely Dan - Can't Buy A Thrill (22 plays)

20. Various Artists - Adult Swim Singles Program 2016 (22 plays)

21. Beastie Boys - Check Your Head (21 plays)

22. Tek & Metasota - What's That 4? (21 plays)

23. Buffalo Springfield - Again (20 plays)

Flatbasset Radio's 25 Most Played Albums: August '16

Is it the first of the month already? Damn, this summer's gone by quickly.

How was your August? Did you have fun? I got rained on a lot, which was terrible, but I went to the State Fair yesterday, which was not terrible. It's amazing how falafel on a stick can change your whole outlook, isn't it?

Before we get to the album collage, a big thanks to everybody who checked out the show's this month. Yes, their were only two of them, but both of them were outstanding, so that's got to count for something. Of course the show is free and available to stream or download from anywhere at anytime by anybody. Think of it as one of those Spotify "Discover" playlists except it's curated by an actual human being whose neuroses cause him to put way more effort into his show's than any music-loving robot ever could.

Second, a big thanks to all the artists who were on the show who took the time to share the podcast. Those shares & retweets are literally the only way this show reaches a broader audience, so each one is deeply appreciated.

Lastly, my monthly reminder that, as much as I enjoy writing about music & putting together the show, I'd like it a lot more if I could do it for a living. If you or anybody you know is looking for somebody to write about music or host a low-to-medium quality podcast, pass the blog along. I don't ask for much, just a pile of money and the ability to spend all my waking hours living out my dream. I don't think that's asking for much.

Let's get to the collage. As always, remember that every song listened to counts as a "play." Seems obvious, right? So, for example, Rogue Valley's new album Radiate/Dissolve has 12 songs, meaning each time I listen to it all the way through it counts 12 "plays." As usual, all stats come from my Last.FM page. Give it a follow if you really want to stay up on what's getting the most plays around Planet New Basset.

So, here we go:

01. Descendents - Hypercaffium Spazzinate (136 plays)

02. Rogue Valley - Radiate/Dissolve (84 plays)

03. Posh Lost - Posh Lost (70 plays)

04. Atmosphere - Fishing Blues (54 plays)

05. Various Artists - Sound Unseen (42 plays)

06. The Persian Leaps - Your City, Underwater (38 plays)

07. Squeeze - Singles 45's And Under (36 plays)

08. The Nadas - Listen Through The Static (35 plays)

09. Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. - Produce Vol. 1 (32 plays)

10. Paper Tiger - In Other Words: Part Two (32 plays)

11. Pet Milk - Philadelphia Punklife (28 plays)

12. Buck 65 - Situation (Demos) (28 plays)

20. Malachi Constant - Zenith (24 plays)

21. The Stone Roses - The Complete Stone Roses (23 plays)

22. Various Artists - Adult Swim Singles Program 2016 (23 plays)

23. The Streets - A Grand Don't Come For Free (22 plays)

24. Radiohead - Kid A (22 plays)

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #82 (Aesop Rock MegaMix)

Get bit by the hound...

Well hello again, podcast fans! Welcome to an extra special episode of Flatbasset Radio.

If you've been following along with the podcast over the years (and really, why wouldn't you), you know that I'm a huge fan of Aesop Rock. In this crazy internet world where we're able to build our own culture around our own taste, Aes looms as the greatest rapper whoever rapped. To try to drive that point home I've been playing him on the podcast pretty consistently since the beginning of the podcast. Hell, I even named his Labor Days album to the inaugural Flatbasset Radio American Album Hall Of Fame class.

Why do I bring this up? Because Aesop Rock is out on tour in support of The Impossible Kid and that tour's pulling into your favorite danceteria & mine, First Ave., tomorrow night. That's right, kids, Aesop, Rob Sonic, Homeboy Sandman, DJ Zone, & Dem Atlas all under one roof for the low, low price of $20.

To celebrate the show I decided to dedicate this week's episode of Flatbasset Radio entirely to Aesop Rock.

Well.... not entirely.

As you can see from the tracklist below this isn't merely a "Best Of..." collection. I did my best to try to include a lot of collaborations, some semi-lost tracks, & some maybe-lesser-known remixes. Hell, I even chopped up his excellent The Blob beat tape for some interludes. Obviously I'm a biased opinion, but I'm going to go ahead and say that this is easily the best thing that's ever been uploaded to the internet. Also, it's free. So, y'know, give it a listen.

I've finally set up a decent downloading site, so if you'd like to download Flatbasset Radio: Episode #82 (Aesop Rock MegaMix) (with all the appropriate iTunes tagging), just click here.

If you don't have the time or desire to download the show, just click the Mixcloud player below and you're good to go.

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #69 (Rhymesayers 20th Anniversary Celebration)

You can be yourself and be a star...

Well hello again, podcast fans!  Welcome to a very special episode of Flatbasset Radio!

Folks, it's a big day here in beautiful Minneapolis. Rhymesayers Entertainment, pillar of the local music community and the national hip-hop world, is celebrating their 20th anniversary with a big ass show down at the Target Center.  It's a celebration, bitches!

As a tribute to all the hard work the label's done over the years, I decided to put together a show celebrating some of my absolute favorites RSE artists. It was a tough show to do, many great songs were left off, but that's a testament to the job they've done over the years.  RSE keeps their quality control on point.

So, in this week's show I talk a lot about the importance of the label for all kinds of reasons.  Rhymesayers isn't just about the music.  In addition to playing the jams I discuss the importance of Rhymesayers as a part of the community, an example of the spirit of independence that runs throughout the midwest, and a testament to the fact that hard work & a belief in the goal can go a long way. Even if you're not a hip-hop fan, it's indisputable that the label's success has provided a blueprint for independent businesses throughout the Twin Cities. It's provided a beacon in a city that prides itself on an independent streak that was burning before RSE existed and will continue to burn after it's gone. Rhymesayers Entertainment is both an institution itself an inextricable link in the chain of the Twin Cities history.

Of course, at its core, it's built on the jams.  Kick back and enjoy!

As always, Flatbasset Radio is completely free. Just click the Mixcloud player below and you're good to go.

01. P.O.S. - Let It Rattle

02. Freeway & Jake One - One Thing

03. Toki Wright - Devil's Advocate
