Flatbasset Radio: Episode #106

Oh, the pain in my legs...

Well hello again, everybody! Welcome to Flatbasset Radio's long-in-production Episode #106!

That's right, folks, I finally got my lazy ass back to work after taking nearly six weeks off from the podcast. I know what you're thinking, "Well, you must have been very busy. Between work and your commitment to self-improvement I can completely understand taking six weeks off."

Wrong! I took on no extra work and may actually be dumber than the last time I recorded a show.

Nonetheless, I've got a great show for you this week. We've got to catch up on some anniversaries, check out some outstanding new local music, look ahead to some concerts this week, look back at a major concert that passed, dig into some instrumentals, and, sadly, mourn to lost titans of their respective genres. All that plus the Cover Of The Week and the Flatbasset Flatclassic!

As always, Flatbasset Radio is completely free. I've finally set up a decent downloading site, so if you'd like to download Flatbasset Radio: Episode #106 (with all the appropriate iTunes tagging), just click here.

If you don't have the time or desire to download the show, just click the Mixcloud player below and you're good to go.

Here's how Episode #106 plays out:

01. The Persian Leaps - Picture My Reaction

02. Madlib - 10 Summers Down

03. Brand New - Can't Get It Out

04. Carl Broemel - The Golden Age

05. Sonic Youth - Sugar Kane

09. Free Truman - Vape God

10. Carter Burwell - Conspiracy Theory

\

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #104 (American Album Hall Of Fame - Class Of 2017)

Never had to knock on wood...

Well hello again, everybody! Welcome to Flatbasset Radio: Episode #104!

Folks, on Saturday we celebrated some of the finest work coming from our brothers & sisters in the Great White North. Now, I may be a few days late, however, it was just America's birthday which means it's time for my favorite episode of the year. That's right, it's time to induct six new albums into the Flatbasset Radio American Album Hall Of Fame.

Before we get to this year's inductees, let me bombard you with some links to the previous induction ceremonies:

Class Of 2015 (Part I)
Class Of 2015 (Part II)
Class Of 2016 (Part I)
Class Of 2016 (Part II)

Unlike last year's class, which skewed a bit toward Minnesota, this year's class is a celebration of the East Coast. In fact, with the exception of a nod to Boston, the majority of these artists are as ingrained in New York City culture & history as Central Park, Madison Square Garden, criminally underrated bagels, & brutally-overrated pizza.

Before we get to the albums, though, here's a quick reminder of the FRAAHOF's criteria:

01. An album must be at least 10 years old to be inducted into the FRAAHOF

02. Only 6 albums per year may be inducted

03. Only 2 of those 6 albums may have been released over 30 years ago

04. No artist can appear in consecutive years

So, with those criteria in mind, here's a look at this year's inductees:

Hell of a class, no? As per usual, I'll be playing three songs off each of the albums being inducted and talk for far too long about each of them. Sound good? Well, too bad, you get what you pay for.

So, now that you know, here's what the Flatbasset Radio American Album Hall Of Fame looks like as of today:

Alright, let's get to the show.

As always, Flatbasset Radio is completely free. I've finally set up a decent downloading site, so if you'd like to download Flatbasset Radio: Episode #104 (with all the appropriate iTunes tagging), click here for Part 1 & here for Part 2.

Now, let's get to it:

01. Party Pit
02. First Night
03. Stuck Between Stations

04. The Rascal King
05. Another Drinkin' Song
06. The Impression That I Get

07. Peg
08. Deacon Blues
09. Josie

And Part 2 of the Class Of 2017:

01. Someone Great
02. North American Scum
03. All My Friends

04. Tasmanian Pain Coaster (w/The Mars Volta)
05. EMG
06. Poisenville Kids No Wins (w/Cat Power)

07. Waiting For The Man
08. Femme Fatale
09. Sunday Morning

There you have it, folks. Congratulations to this year's inductees. Thanks for stopping by!

Flatbasset Radio's 25 Most Played Albums: April '16

Well hello again, everybody! Welcome to yet another installment of Album Collage Monthly!

Yes, April and its showers are now behind us. It was a sad month (Prince is gone) and joyous month (Oh shit, the sun!). Most importantly, for our purposes anyway, it was a month that afforded me lots of time to listen to music.

As you can see from the picture below, I covered a lot of bases this month. Some indie rock, some electronic stuff, some compilations.... Hell, variety's the spice of life.

As always, a yuuuuggggeee thank you to anybody who stopped by the blog this month. Extra yuuuuuggggeee thanks to anybody who listened to the show. Not to belabor the point, but I put a lot of time into the Flatbasset Radio podcast. It means a lot to me that somebody out there is giving it a shot.

(Speaking of which, if you'd like to catch up on the show, my Mixcloud page has every episode free to stream. My Archive page has every episode free to download with complete iTunes tags and everything).

On that note, let's get to this month's albums. Friendly reminder: One song = one play. Devata Daun's new album has 10 tracks on it, so every time I listened to it it registers as 10 "plays." Here we go!

Well hello there, everybody.  Long time no see, eh?

Now, I know what you're thinking: "Who's stupid page is this and how did I get here?"  Well, you tell me, smart guy, it's your browser.

You may also be thinking, "Hey, isn't the post below this a recap of February's albums?  Did Droogsy really take a whole month off?"

Flatbasset Radio's 50 Most Played Albums: February '15

Well hello again, everybody.  The cold and sadness of February is behind us and I think we all made it out unscathed.  At least I hope we did.  Maybe you didn't.  If you were on the fence about making it, perhaps it was because you thought to yourself, "Self, life's terrible.  It's cold outside, it's dark so early, my girlfriend left me on Valentine's Day, and my cat refuses to acknowledge me unless he's hungry.  However, I have to press through because I'm just hellbent on finding out what albums Droogsy's been listening to while he traverses the darkest days of winter."

First off, if you did actually have these thoughts, you have issues.  Real, serious issues and I would absolutely advise you to seek professional help or, failing that, unprofessional help.  Second, things are looking up, because it's time to recap Flatbasset Radio's 50 Most Played Albums of February 2015.

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #47 (w/MinneSarah)

Turn the light off, keep your shirt on...

Well hello again, podcast fans! Welcome to Flatbasset Radio: Episode #47!

It was another fun week here in podcast land.  For Episode #47 I ventured back to St. Paul in an effort to, "recover the magic" with MinneSarah.  Frankly, I think we succeeded.  This time around we discuss the weather (like true Minnesotans), last winter's weather (like sad, true Minnesotans), our favorite Nashville band, the type of music you get to know living in a small town, whether or not it's worth becoming a fan of Fleetwood Mac, the intoxicating effect of stadium shows, how The Depot stays up and running, trying to teach English in The Bronx, which artists might be filling hockey arenas in ten years, MinneSarah's garage rock 180, our huge Spanish audience, what records to pick up at the library, how the indie Class Of 2003 is faring these days, iconic 90's t-shirts, & the dividing line among R.E.M. fans.  All that plus the Cover Of The Week & the Flatbasset Flatclassic!

As always, Episode #47 is free to stream and/or download.  To download the show just click on the title below.  To stream the show simply click "play" on the Mixcloud player.
