Flatbasset Radio: Episode #131 (American Album Hall Of Fame - Class Of 2018)

While I'm alive I'll feel alive...

Well hello again, everybody! Welcome to Flatbasset Radio: Episode #131!

Folks, last Sunday we celebrated some of the finest work coming from our brothers & sisters in the Great White North. Now, I may be a few days late, however, it was just America's birthday which means it's time for my favorite episode of the year. That's right, it's time to induct six new albums into the Flatbasset Radio American Album Hall Of Fame.

Before we get to this year's inductees, let me bombard you with some links to the previous induction ceremonies:

Class Of 2015 (Part I)
Class Of 2015 (Part II)

Class Of 2016 (Part I)
Class Of 2016 (Part II)

Class Of 2017 (Part I)
Class Of 2017 (Part II)

Note - The links above are for the previous blog post and the Archive.org MP3's. For reasons that have yet to be sufficiently explained to me Mixcloud takes down each episode of this show. I'd be angry, but it's a free site. You get what you pay for.

Before we get to the albums, though, here's a quick reminder of the FRAAHOF's criteria:

01. An album must be at least 10 years old to be inducted into the FRAAHOF

02. Only 6 albums per year may be inducted

03. Only 2 of those 6 albums may have been released over 30 years ago

04. No artist can appear in consecutive years

So, with those criteria in mind, here's a look at this year's inductees:

This year's class is a curious one in that it contains a couple of first-ballot Hall Of Famers, a couple that may only be FRAAHOF-worthy to me, and a couple undeniable pillars of American alternative rock. Unlike previous years, we're upping the song count to four per album plus plenty of me rabblin' on trying (and failing) to adequately explain my reasoning behind their enshrinement. It's a good time.

So, now that you know, here's what the Flatbasset Radio American Album Hall Of Fame looks like as of today:

Pretty sexy. This stupid concept is really taking shape.

Alright, let's get to this year's show.

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #112

Thanks for listening, thanks for understanding...

Well hello again, music fans. Welcome to Flatbasset Radio: Episode #112!

It's the last show of 2017, everybody and I, for one, couldn't be happier. 2017 was a trash can fire. Will 2018 be better? I don't know. What am I, Kreskin? I hope so, but I'm a practical man, so I'm sure not counting on it.

The one thing I can say with some certainty: This is an outstanding episode of Flatbasset Radio!

(Second thing I can say with some certainty: I am not great at segues.)

Anyway, continuing a theme from last week's episode, I'm making up for some lost time with this one. Over the course of 2017 I slept/worked/moped my way through too many weeks without putting together a show and, as such, I missed a bunch of classic anniversaries. I'm rectifying that here on Ep. #112. A semi-forgotten hip-hop classic, an old demo by a fallen power-pop god , TWO 50th anniversary classics, my favorite post-makeout-stroll album of 1997, the most perfect power-pop song ever written, some weirdo 70's instrumental stuff, one of the great forgotten punk bands of the 90's... all of these things make an appearance on this week's show (as well as a new one from the Twin Cities' favorite ex-pats). All that plus the Cover Of The Week & the Flatbasset Flatclassic.

As always, Flatbasset Radio is completely free. I've finally set up a decent downloading site, so if you'd like to download Flatbasset Radio: Episode #112 (with all the appropriate iTunes tagging), just click here.

If you don't have the time or desire to download the show, just click the Mixcloud player below and you're good to go.

Here's how Episode #112 plays out:

02. Lupe Fiasco - Hip-Hop Saved My Life

03. The Beatles - Flying

04. Nirvana - Son Of A Gun

05. Rivers Cuomo - Chess

06. David Bowie - Moss Garden

07. R.E.M. - Nightswimming

08. Buffalo Springfield - Rock & Roll Woman

09. Wretch Like Me - Hello Hollywood, This Is David

10. Green Day - Last Ride In

11. Sugar - If I Can't Change Your Mind

There you have it. See you in hell, 2017!

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #47 (w/MinneSarah)

Turn the light off, keep your shirt on...

Well hello again, podcast fans! Welcome to Flatbasset Radio: Episode #47!

It was another fun week here in podcast land.  For Episode #47 I ventured back to St. Paul in an effort to, "recover the magic" with MinneSarah.  Frankly, I think we succeeded.  This time around we discuss the weather (like true Minnesotans), last winter's weather (like sad, true Minnesotans), our favorite Nashville band, the type of music you get to know living in a small town, whether or not it's worth becoming a fan of Fleetwood Mac, the intoxicating effect of stadium shows, how The Depot stays up and running, trying to teach English in The Bronx, which artists might be filling hockey arenas in ten years, MinneSarah's garage rock 180, our huge Spanish audience, what records to pick up at the library, how the indie Class Of 2003 is faring these days, iconic 90's t-shirts, & the dividing line among R.E.M. fans.  All that plus the Cover Of The Week & the Flatbasset Flatclassic!

As always, Episode #47 is free to stream and/or download.  To download the show just click on the title below.  To stream the show simply click "play" on the Mixcloud player.
