Flatbasset Radio: Episode #131 (American Album Hall Of Fame - Class Of 2018)

While I'm alive I'll feel alive...

Well hello again, everybody! Welcome to Flatbasset Radio: Episode #131!

Folks, last Sunday we celebrated some of the finest work coming from our brothers & sisters in the Great White North. Now, I may be a few days late, however, it was just America's birthday which means it's time for my favorite episode of the year. That's right, it's time to induct six new albums into the Flatbasset Radio American Album Hall Of Fame.

Before we get to this year's inductees, let me bombard you with some links to the previous induction ceremonies:

Class Of 2015 (Part I)
Class Of 2015 (Part II)

Class Of 2016 (Part I)
Class Of 2016 (Part II)

Class Of 2017 (Part I)
Class Of 2017 (Part II)

Note - The links above are for the previous blog post and the Archive.org MP3's. For reasons that have yet to be sufficiently explained to me Mixcloud takes down each episode of this show. I'd be angry, but it's a free site. You get what you pay for.

Before we get to the albums, though, here's a quick reminder of the FRAAHOF's criteria:

01. An album must be at least 10 years old to be inducted into the FRAAHOF

02. Only 6 albums per year may be inducted

03. Only 2 of those 6 albums may have been released over 30 years ago

04. No artist can appear in consecutive years

So, with those criteria in mind, here's a look at this year's inductees:

This year's class is a curious one in that it contains a couple of first-ballot Hall Of Famers, a couple that may only be FRAAHOF-worthy to me, and a couple undeniable pillars of American alternative rock. Unlike previous years, we're upping the song count to four per album plus plenty of me rabblin' on trying (and failing) to adequately explain my reasoning behind their enshrinement. It's a good time.

So, now that you know, here's what the Flatbasset Radio American Album Hall Of Fame looks like as of today:

Pretty sexy. This stupid concept is really taking shape.

Alright, let's get to this year's show.

As always, Flatbasset Radio is completely free. I've finally set up a decent downloading site, so if you'd like to download Flatbasset Radio: Episode #131 (with all the appropriate iTunes tagging), click here for Part 1 & here for Part 2.

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #127

You know damn well where you'll go...

Well hello again, everybody! Welcome to Flatbasset Radio: Episode #127!

That's right, it's a rare Tuesday night show here at Planet New Basset. Something about the heat and holiday led to spending an inordinate amount of time lying in the air conditioning and napping, but you know I wouldn't leave you hanging for a whole week (at least not during the summer). No algorithms, no agenda, just 12 songs over 58 minutes lovingly assembled by yours truly.

On this week's show we complain about the heat, check in with one of the Twin Cities greatest bands of the 21st century, play the "what could have been game" on the anniversary of a rock icon's death, continue our exploration of the Disposable America catalog, wonder about the "American Bowie," listen to a new beat from one of our favorite local producers, discuss the various phases of the greatest American punk band, and celebrate one of the great Midwestern bands of my lifetime. All that plus the Cover Of The Week, our deep dive into Nate's Archives, a trip in the Minnesota Way-Back Machines, and, as always, the Flatbasset Flatclassic.

As always, Flatbasset Radio is completely free. I've finally set up a decent downloading site, so if you'd like to download Flatbasset Radio: Episode #127 (with all the appropriate iTunes tagging), just click here.

Here's how Flatbasset Radio: Episode #127 plays out:

Well hello again, everybody. Welcome to Flatbasset Radio: Episode #115!

Folks, we're back to our regularly scheduled program this weeks. 12 songs, 60 minutes, some banter... you know the drill by now

Flatbasset Radio's 25 Most Played Albums: November '17

Well hello everybody. Welcome to another edition of Album Collage Monthly!

Folks, I don't know about you, but my November was straight trash. I won't bore you with the details, but too much worky, not enough sleepy, not enough bloggy... It wasn't any fun. It was so bad, in fact, that it bled into December and pushed this post back a day. I'm sorry for that, but really, if you spent yesterday refreshing this blog waiting for the collage you have problems far worse than mine.

Anyway, as always, big thanks to everybody who checked out the lone show I posted this month. No matter how rough things are, I take sincere joy out of playing that Descendents song every Thanksgiving. It really does say the things I'd like to in a much better (and catchier) way than I can. Sincere thanks to all the bands who play the way they play and help push through the darker days.

Let's get to the thing.

(As always, one "play" equals one song. For example, the new Mozzer album has 12 songs on it, so each time I listen to it front to back it counts as twelve "plays." As usual, all stats come from my Last.FM page. Give it a follow if you really want to stay up on what's getting the most plays.)

01. Shredders - Dangerous Jumps (84 plays)

02. Morrissey - Low In High School (84 plays)

05. Blaha - 499-456 (55 plays)

The catcher in the rye caught a catch-22...

Well hello again, podcast fans!  Welcome to Flatbasset Radio: Episode #55!

As always, this episode is available to stream or download for free.  Click on the album title below to download the show. Just click on the Mixcloud player below to stream.

Newest Industry Presents - Flatbasset Radio: Episode #38 (w/MinneSarah)

(THIS POST ORIGINALLY APPEARS ON THE TWIN CITIES BLOG NEWEST INDUSTRY)

You heard that we were great, now you know we're lame...

For those of you who are unaware of the Flatbasset Radio format, here's what you're looking at: TCDroogsma is our resident MP3 junkie. As you've probably noticed in his Songs Of The Week column, he's not always the most positive music fan. In an effort to prove that he is, in fact, a fan of music, we give him an hour each week to play the songs he's digging and talk a little bit about them. Once he's recorded his podcast we put it right here on the website for free to stream and/or download!

This week's episode TCDroogsma heads over to St. Paul to reunite with his estranged co-host MinneSarah & play some summer jams!  Along the way they discuss the cruelty of summer in Minnesota, seasonal drinking habits, the work ethic of 90's pop bands, European weather patterns, the cinematic tour-de-force that is Good Burger, haggling over the price of an EP, pronouncing English bands with Minnesota accents, how to pass time when summer hits its bad stretches, MinneSarah's favorite Nashville band, the struggle to cast a vote in the 2002 election, how context turns a good song into a "summer jam," and reminisce about the first time they saw one of their favorite bands and  seeing that band again last weekend!  All that plus the Cover Of The Week & Flatbasset Flat Classic!

You can download the podcast for free by clicking the episode's title or stream the episode by clicking on the Mixcloud player below.
