Flatbasset Radio: Episode #130 (Canada Day Special!)

I won't forget you if someone else comes along...

Well hello again, podcast fans! Welcome to Flatbasset Radio's Annual Canada Day Special!

That's right, folks, another Canada Day is upon us. Now I know things are a little curious between my country and yours right now. I know that, despite hundreds of years of peaceful co-existence and the world's longest unprotected, our President has decided that our relationship is unfair and you're somehow to be blamed (as if you're the tempestuous, excitable, delusional party in our relationship). Honestly, considering no Canadian team has won the Cup since '93, I'm surprised you haven't turned on us. But I digress....

Listen, Canada, I can't claim to speak everybody in America (for better and far more often worse, thanks to Twitter, they're certainly more than capable of speaking for themselves) but I've said it a hundred times if I said it once - I absolutely consider Canadians my brothers and sisters. I've spent nearly all 36 years of my life living in a state that shares a border with Canada and I've interacted with hundreds (if not thousands) of Canadians in various capacities and I can say with confidence that 90% of those interactions have been nothing but enjoyable. Yes, sure, there's always a few bad apples (cough... cough... Jets fans...), but what can you do? There's always a few. I don't let them ruin my opinion of your country and I hope you don't let the bad apples from Minnesota ruin your opinion of ours.

That said, let's get to the show. Lots of great Canadian artists on this one (and I even removed my stupid rambling from the proceedings). No agenda, no algorithms, just a 16 song, 53 minute love letter to the our neighbours to the north. I've got a few anniversaries in the mix, a Cover Of The Week, and a 50th Anniversary Flatbasset Flatclassic! Enjoy!

As always, Flatbasset Radio is completely free. I've finally set up a decent downloading site, so if you'd like to download Flatbasset Radio: Episode #130 (with all the appropriate iTunes tagging), just click here.

Flatbasset Radio's 25 Most Played Albums: July '16

Well hello again, pointless statistics fans. Let's check in on Flatbasset Radio's 25 Most Played Albums Of July '16.

Can you believe July is already over? This summer is just flying by. Between the oppressive heat & the patriotism I suppose that's not unexpected. None the less, in between red, white, & blue sweating and the sweet, sweet relief of affordable air conditioning I still managed to listen to a tremendous amount of music over the last month. Hell, I even had time to crank out a few blog posts & podcasts (it's amazing what you can accomplish when you refuse to leave the house).

Speaking of which, as always, a tremendous thank you to everybody who checked out the show this month. I know it was a strange batch of shows. Between the Canada Day Special, American Album Hall Of Fame, & Aesop Rock MegaMix it was a very theme-oriented July here at Planet New Basset. Thanks for sticking with me on those ones.

Let me take a moment to throw out my monthly reminder that Flatbasset Radio is open to suggestions & requests. If you're a musician or want me to look into your friend's band or just think I need to play more Morrissey on the show, feel free to hit me up via Twitter or Facebook.

Let me also take a moment to throw out my monthly reminder that Flatbasset Radio is totally & completely free to steam & download. I don't make any money doing this*, I just really like recording shows & playing songs. I know it's a big internet out there. Check in on it while searching for Pokemon or Tindering or whatever else it is you kids do online.

(*I would happily take money for doing this. If you need a music writer or podcaster, get at me.)

Anyway, let's get to the... main attraction? That seems like an oversell. Let's get to the thing.

Before I get to the stats, the usual reminder: Every song listened to counts as a "play." Seems obvious, right? So, for example, Pale Spectre's excellent killer new EP has 6 songs, meaning each time I listen to it all the way through it counts 6 "plays." As usual, all stats come from my Last.FM page. Give it a follow if you really want to stay up on what's getting the most plays around Planet New Basset.

Alright, here we go...

01. Dem Atlas - MF Dem (91 plays)

02. ZuluZuluu - What's The Price? (56 plays)

03. Sophia Eris - Sophia Eris (56 plays)

04. Pale Spectre - Principles & Faculties (48 plays)

05. Prince & The Revolution - Purple Rain (36 plays)

06. Various Artists - A Record Label Sampler Volume 1 (34 plays)

07. Beck - Odelay (32 plays)

08. The Lyndales - Lo-Fi Pop 1.0 (32 plays)

09. Kill Sadie - Half-Cocked Concepts (32 plays)

10. Four Tet - Randoms (29 plays)

11. Various Artists - 2011 Pitchfork Sampler (29 plays)

12. Madvillain - Madvillainy (28 plays)

13. At The Drive-In - Relationship Of Command (28 plays)

14. The Replacements - Tim (28 plays)

15. The Pooches - 9 Songs About Nothing (27 plays)

16. Fucked Up - Hidden World (26 plays)

17. Various Artists - Voltage: Fashion Amplified: 2004 (26 plays)

18. The Strokes - Future Present Past (24 plays)

19. Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool (22 plays)

20. Wilco - Summerteeth (22 plays)

21. Ian Kamau - First (21 plays)

22. Frankie Teardrop - Hell Yep (20 plays)

23. Taking Back Sunday - Tell All Your Friends (20 plays)

24. Various Artists - Adult Swim Singles Collection 2016 (20 plays)

25. Various Artists - Late Night Tales: Franz Ferdinand (20 plays)

There you have it, folks. Stay cool out there.

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #80 (Canada Day Special!)

"Like leaves from an old maple..."

Well hello again, everybody! Welcome to a very special episode of Flatbasset Radio!

Folks, if you didn't know, today is Canada Day! That's right, our brother to the North is celebrating today and we're here to celebrate right along with them. To be honest, there's a part of me that's surprised the same human garbage that uses Cinco De Mayo & St. Patty's Day as an excuse to get completely wrecked hasn't co-opted Canada Day yet, but their loss is our gain.

To celebrate, I've put together a whole episode devoted to Canadian artists large and small. We check in with some of Flatbasset Radio's favorites, some new artists, jangling indie pop, throwback hip-hop, hardcore, power-pop, and everything in between as we crisscross the vast expanse that is Canada. Along the way I manage to butcher the French language (again), attempt to explain how Minnesota's the bridge between Canada & the U.S., compare Winnipeg to St. Paul (minus the playoff hockey, of course), and somehow avoid playing Drake (it wasn't easy). All that plus the Cover Of The Week & Flatbasset Flatclassic!

As always, Flatbasset Radio is completely free. I've finally set up a decent downloading site, so if you'd like to download Flatbasset Radio: Episode #79 (with all the appropriate iTunes tagging), just click here.

If you don't have the time or desire to download the show, just click the Mixcloud player below and you're good to go.

Here's how Episode #80 plays out:

01. Still Life Still - Danse Cave

02. Buck 65 - Je T'aime Mon Amour

03. Fucked Up - Paper The House

04. Stars - Wonderful Life

05. The Everywheres - A Nightmare

06. Broken Social Scene - World Sick

07. Shad - Compromise

08. Sloan - 500 Up

09. Imaginary Cities - Bells Of Cologne

10. Ian Kamau - Say It Ain't So

11. Neil Young - One Of These Days

12. Wolf Parade - I'll Believe In Anything

There it is, folks! Enjoy!

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #46 (w/MinneSarah)

I knew it when I saw your record collection...

Well hello again, podcast fans.  Welcome to Flatbasset Radio: Episode #46!

MinneSarah's back from Europe, everybody!  Big thanks to my homey Nick for teaming up with me for one of his Young Sandwich mixes while she was gone.  Big thanks to all of you who checked that episode out.  It was a good one.

As always, this episode is free to stream or download.  Click the episode's title below for a download link or click on the Mixcloud player below to stream.
