Flatbasset Radio: Episode #139 (Best Of 2020 - The Current Song Of The Day)

This has been the hardest year...

Well hello again, everybody. Welcome to Flatbasset Radio: Episode #139!

That's right, folks, we're starting this year the same we start every year, by counting down the jams from the previous year. First up is The Current Song Of The Day countdown.

As loyal readers/listeners know I'm a huge fan of The Current's Song Of The Day podcast. I've been following it since 2007 and have missed only a handful of jams over the years. I highly suggest you head on over The Current's website and follow along for yourself (of subscribe via Apple Music. I'm not sure how you do that because I'm still using and version of iTunes from the Obama years, but I'm sure it's a thing you can do).

Before we get to this year's countdown, a few links. First, previous Current SOTD countdowns:

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #7 (Best Of 2012)
Flatbasset Radio: Episode #28 (Best Of 2013)
Flatbasset Radio: Episode #52 (Best Of 2014)
Flatbasset Radio: Episode #70 (Best Of 2015)
Flatbasset Radio: Episode #89 (Best Of 2016)
Flatbasset Radio: Episode #113 (Best Of 2017)
Flatbasset Radio: Episode #133 (Best Of 2018)
Flatbasset Radio: Episode #137 (Best Of 2020)

Of note: Flatbasset Radio: Episode #7 is posted here as a download from Archive.org because the show was "disabled" on Mixcloud. I'm not sure why Mixcloud took it down, but I can only assume it was because the episode was so popular that it threatened to crash their servers.

With all of that out of the way, let's get to the show. Robot Ralph resumes his annual hosting duties and our deeply unpopular tradition continues.

As always, Flatbasset Radio is completely free. I've finally set up a decent downloading site, so if you'd like to download Flatbasset Radio: Episode #139, just click here.

If you don't have the time or desire to download the show, just click the Mixcloud player below and you're good to go.

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #130 (Canada Day Special!)

I won't forget you if someone else comes along...

Well hello again, podcast fans! Welcome to Flatbasset Radio's Annual Canada Day Special!

That's right, folks, another Canada Day is upon us. Now I know things are a little curious between my country and yours right now. I know that, despite hundreds of years of peaceful co-existence and the world's longest unprotected, our President has decided that our relationship is unfair and you're somehow to be blamed (as if you're the tempestuous, excitable, delusional party in our relationship). Honestly, considering no Canadian team has won the Cup since '93, I'm surprised you haven't turned on us. But I digress....

Listen, Canada, I can't claim to speak everybody in America (for better and far more often worse, thanks to Twitter, they're certainly more than capable of speaking for themselves) but I've said it a hundred times if I said it once - I absolutely consider Canadians my brothers and sisters. I've spent nearly all 36 years of my life living in a state that shares a border with Canada and I've interacted with hundreds (if not thousands) of Canadians in various capacities and I can say with confidence that 90% of those interactions have been nothing but enjoyable. Yes, sure, there's always a few bad apples (cough... cough... Jets fans...), but what can you do? There's always a few. I don't let them ruin my opinion of your country and I hope you don't let the bad apples from Minnesota ruin your opinion of ours.

That said, let's get to the show. Lots of great Canadian artists on this one (and I even removed my stupid rambling from the proceedings). No agenda, no algorithms, just a 16 song, 53 minute love letter to the our neighbours to the north. I've got a few anniversaries in the mix, a Cover Of The Week, and a 50th Anniversary Flatbasset Flatclassic! Enjoy!

As always, Flatbasset Radio is completely free. I've finally set up a decent downloading site, so if you'd like to download Flatbasset Radio: Episode #130 (with all the appropriate iTunes tagging), just click here.

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #126

There's God in the arc when the ball leaves the park...

Well hello again, everybody! Welcome to Flatbasset Radio: Episode #126!

Folks, it's a second consecutive Monday episode. I'm not completely certain how it happened since Monday is pretty much the worst possible day to release a show like mine... and yet, here we are. Somehow I'm getting worse at this as the years go by.

If the glass if half full, though, it's a new episode! Lots of great stuff on this one. We check in on the latest release from Forged Artifacts (the finest cassette label in Minneapolis), embrace a little clarinet, continue our exploration of the Disposable America catalog, listen to one of the greatest American indie rock bands cover another of the greatest American indie rock bands, enjoy a mid-show instrumental break, check in on the man behind my favorite Twin Cities band of the last 10 years, revisit some 3rd wave ska, bask in Mason Jennings blanket-like voice, and find the saddest point where man meets machine to stare down death. All that plus the Cover Of The Week, a deep dive into Nate's Archives, the trip in The Minnesota Way-Back Machine, and the Flatbasset Flatclassic.

As always, Flatbasset Radio is completely free. I've finally set up a decent downloading site, so if you'd like to download Flatbasset Radio: Episode #126 (with all the appropriate iTunes tagging), just click here.

Here's how Episode #126 plays out:

01. Lawn - My Boy

02. Andy Shauf - Lick Your Wounds

03. Maura - My Shoes Fit

04. Superchunk - Brand New Love

05. The Boys - I Don't Care
