Flatbasset Radio: Episode #139 (Best Of 2020 - The Current Song Of The Day)

This has been the hardest year...

Well hello again, everybody. Welcome to Flatbasset Radio: Episode #139!

That's right, folks, we're starting this year the same we start every year, by counting down the jams from the previous year. First up is The Current Song Of The Day countdown.

As loyal readers/listeners know I'm a huge fan of The Current's Song Of The Day podcast. I've been following it since 2007 and have missed only a handful of jams over the years. I highly suggest you head on over The Current's website and follow along for yourself (of subscribe via Apple Music. I'm not sure how you do that because I'm still using and version of iTunes from the Obama years, but I'm sure it's a thing you can do).

Before we get to this year's countdown, a few links. First, previous Current SOTD countdowns:

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #7 (Best Of 2012)
Flatbasset Radio: Episode #28 (Best Of 2013)
Flatbasset Radio: Episode #52 (Best Of 2014)
Flatbasset Radio: Episode #70 (Best Of 2015)
Flatbasset Radio: Episode #89 (Best Of 2016)
Flatbasset Radio: Episode #113 (Best Of 2017)
Flatbasset Radio: Episode #133 (Best Of 2018)
Flatbasset Radio: Episode #137 (Best Of 2020)

Of note: Flatbasset Radio: Episode #7 is posted here as a download from Archive.org because the show was "disabled" on Mixcloud. I'm not sure why Mixcloud took it down, but I can only assume it was because the episode was so popular that it threatened to crash their servers.

With all of that out of the way, let's get to the show. Robot Ralph resumes his annual hosting duties and our deeply unpopular tradition continues.

As always, Flatbasset Radio is completely free. I've finally set up a decent downloading site, so if you'd like to download Flatbasset Radio: Episode #139, just click here.

If you don't have the time or desire to download the show, just click the Mixcloud player below and you're good to go.

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #137 (Best Of 2019 - The Current Song Of The Day)

Magenta, orange, acid green, peacock blue, and burgundy...

Well hello again, everybody! Long time, no see. Hope everybody is doing alright.

I realize that it's kind of ridiculous to be finally dropping the Best Of 2019 podcasts during the fourth week of November, 2020. Truth is, like pretty much everybody, I've just been holding on for dear life for most of the year. It's been a tough run for everybody.

However, I miss doing the show and I'm nothing if not a sucker for tradition. So, before I can get to any new episodes, I felt it was important to continue the annual countdowns. I've done these shows every year since 2012 and I take a lot of pride in them.

Before we get to this year's countdown, a few links. First, previous Current SOTD countdowns:

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #7 (Best Of 2012)
Flatbasset Radio: Episode #28 (Best Of 2013)
Flatbasset Radio: Episode #52 (Best Of 2014)
Flatbasset Radio: Episode #70 (Best Of 2015)
Flatbasset Radio: Episode #89 (Best Of 2016)
Flatbasset Radio: Episode #113 (Best Of 2017)
Flatbasset Radio: Episode #133 (Best Of 2018)

Of note: Flatbasset Radio: Episode #7 is posted here as a download from Archive.org because the show was "disabled" on Mixcloud. Not sure what that means, but I was so bad at doing the show back then that they probably took it down out of embarrassment.

Second, follow this link to head over to The Current and subscribe to the podcast for yourself. As you're about to hear, they give away some absolute classics.

With all of that out of the way, let's get to the show. Robot Ralph resumes his annual hosting duties and our annual tradition continues.

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #133 (Best Of 2018 - The Current Song Of The Day)

I don't peak too early...

Well hello again, podcast fans! Welcome to Flatbasset Radio: Episode #133!

Folks, how have you been? It's time to put 2018 behind us the only way I know how - with instant nostalgia.

If you've been following the show for a while you know that I like to start every new year by looking back at the old year. Well, 2019 is no different. In this week's show we'll be counting down the 10 best songs given away via The Current's Song Of The Day podcast. As I've said many times, I've been hopelessly devoted to this podcast for years now. As any listener of The Current knows, they really run the gambit from absolute jams to, well, not absolute jams. However, I've no desire to beef with the music lovers over at MPR and I would highly encourage you to subscribe to the podcast yourself. I've been a subscriber since '07 and it's been far more hit than miss.

Before we get to this year's countdown, a few links. First, previous Current SOTD countdowns:

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #7 (Best Of 2012)
Flatbasset Radio: Episode #28 (Best Of 2013)

The format of the show has changed a bit over the years, but I like the way the last few years have played out, so I dusted off old Robot Ralph to lead the countdown this year. No banter, just jams.

As always, Flatbasset Radio is completely free. I've finally set up a decent downloading site, so if you'd like to download Flatbasset Radio: Episode #133 (with all the appropriate iTunes tagging), just click here.

Here we go!

10. The Growlers - Problems III

09. Porcupine - Lifetime

08. J Mascis - See You At The Movies

07. Hinds - The Club

06. Tracyanne & Danny - It Can't Be Love Unless It Hurts

05. Ought - Disgraced In America

04. Last Import - One A Day

03. Martin Devaney - About My Girl

02. Superchunk - What A Time To Be Alive

01. Graveyard Club - Witchcraft

There you have it, folks. As a reminder, I paid no money for these songs and I receive no money for this podcast. I'm not affiliated with MPR or The Current in any way. I'm just a guy counting down the hits. Please don't sue me.

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #89 (Best Of 2016 - The Current Song Of The Day)

I've been blessed with shit luck...

Hello again, everybody! Welcome To Flatbasset Radio: Episode #89! It's time to count down the Top 10 Current Song Of The Day tracks of 2016!

First things first, it was absolutely a coincidence that this show fell on Episode #89. Swear to god.

Second, on to the countdown. As you may have noticed over the years, I'm a tremendous fan of The Current's Song Of The Day podcast. I've downloaded every episode since 2007 and still listen to them all via a weekly system that is far more complicated than it should be. It's a lot of music, man. I needed a system.

As you can imagine, not all of the songs are winners. However, each year I end up with 25-30 real gems. I spend December whittling down the list and do the countdown show during the first week of January each year. Check out these links for more countdowns

The Best Of 2012
The Best Of 2013
The Best Of 2014
The Best Of 2015

It's at this point I feel I should mention that neither myself nor the podcast is in any way affiliated with The Current or NPR. Maybe someday they'll let me play my show on the air. Seems unlikely, but who knows what the future holds?

I highly recommend you head over to The Current's website and subscribe to the podcast yourself. Like I said, it's not all winners, but it's mostly winners, and when was the last time you mostly won at anything?

Alright, now that that's all out of the way, let's get to the countdown! As per yearly recap tradition, I'll limit my thoughts on each track to 140 characters.

As always, Flatbasset Radio is completely free. I've finally set up a decent downloading site, so if you'd like to download Flatbasset Radio: Episode #89 (with all the appropriate iTunes tagging), just click here.

If you don't have the time or desire to download the show, just click the Mixcloud player below and you're good to go.

10. Car Seat Headrest - Fill In The Blank - This remains the only CSH song I've ever heard, but damn is it good. Clever, bitter power pop will always have a home on this show.

09. Mild High Club - Skiptracing - Sounds like it was recorded by the poolside veranda of an AM radio station in 1968. Which I mean as a compliment.

08. Cecil Otter - Cross Countries - Low key probably my favorite Doomtree MC & producer, this new EP was Cecil Otter's first solo release since '08. It's been a long time comin'.

07. Operators - Cold Light - Short of driving to my apartment & punching this show's titular basset hound Dan Boekner will always make these lists.

06. Porches - Car - Having owned a car for years (but not for the past four), they are incredible machines. As are synthesizers. Good stuff.

05. Tickle Torture - Full Court Press (w/Velvet Negroni) - The Prince tribute we all deserved.

04. The Jayhawks - Comeback Kids - The Jayhawks are one of those bands that could tweak their sound a thousand different ways & still deliver the goods. Another classic.
03. BADBADNOTGOOD - Time Moves Slow (w/Samuel T. Herring) - Pace is the trick. Sam Herring doing his best Bobby Womack impression doesn't hurt.

02. PUP - Can't Win - Real talk, PUP. Real talk.

01. Whitney - No Woman - Instant classic. Sounds timeless. This is what I imagine Chicago would sound like if they weren't one of the five worst bands ever.

There you have it, folks. Big thanks to Robot Ralph for co-hosting the show.

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #70 (Best Of 2015 - The Current Song Of The Day)

It ain't who ya know, it's who knows you...

Well hello again, podcast fans! Welcome to an out-fucking-standing episode of the Flatbasset Radio show!

As you likely gathered from the unnecessarily long title of this week's show, you're in for a special episode this week. As per tradition, I'm starting off the new year with a few of "Best Of 2015" shows. This particular episode is a countdown of my 10 favorite songs given away via The Current's Song Of The Day podcast.  Hell, who doesn't love a good countdown?

For those unaware of The Current's SOTD podcast, I highly suggest you look into. Follow this link, subscribe to the show, and each and every weekday you'll find a new song waiting for you. They're not all winners, but as you're about to find out, some of them are absolute gems.

For this countdown I only have a couple of criteria:

01. The song only had to be released as a Current SOTD track in 2015. The song didn't necessarily have to get its proper release in 2015.

02. No songs from albums I eventually purchased. If I did pick up an album that contained a SOTD track, I've probably already played something from it here on the show.

So kick back and listen. I play the jams, complain about how tired I am, mispronounce a bunch of names, and pretty much just fill the blank space between songs. It's a hell of a show.

(Full disclosure, I suppose: I do not work for and am in no way affiliated with MPR or The Current... yet. It's good to have goals though).

As always, Flatbasset Radio is completely free. Just click the Mixcloud player below and you're good to go.

10. Desaparecidos - City On The Hill

09. Rainy Milo - Deal Me Briefly

08. The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Do The Get Down

07. The Mountain Goats - The Legend Of Chavo Guerrero

06. Ratatat - Cream On Chrome

05. Adam Levy - Atoms Never Die

04. Pornonono - Body Right

03. Liz Vice - Empty Me Out

02. Israel Nash - L.A. Lately

01. Destroyer - Dream Lover

It was a hell of a year, wasn't it? Good stuff. Thanks for stopping by and giving the show a spin!
