Flatbasset Radio: Episode #118

Can you squeeze me into an empty page of your diary?

Well hello again, everybody. Welcome to Flatbasset Radio: Episode #118!

That's right, folks, it's Flatbasset Friday and oh boy to I have a show lined up for you. It's been a crazy week here in snowy Minneapolis, but it's Friday and I was dead set on getting this show to all my loyal listeners (hi, Mom!).

This week's episode is stuffed to the gills with jams and banter. Lots of things to say about the stuff (or, conversely, stuff to say about the things). Along the way I tell a story about my terrible apartment building, build a bridge between Flatbasset Radio & Disney (finally!), spotlight an artist who spent some time in the margins of a past episode, find the Twin Cities answer to The Dandy Warhols, spend some time with angry Canadians, spend some time with handsome Canadians, take a peek under the hood of one of my local groups, and spotlight a bunch of great upcoming shows. Along the way we take a dive into Nate's Archives, check out the Cover Of The Week, take a trip in the Minnesota Way-Back Machine, and, as always, revisit an absolutely stellar Flatbasset Flatclassic.

As always, Flatbasset Radio is completely free. I've finally set up a decent downloading site, so if you'd like to download Flatbasset Radio: Episode #118 (with all the appropriate iTunes tagging), just click here.

Here's how Episode #118 plays out:

01. Porcupine - Witness To A Chase Scene

02. Why? - One Mississippi

03. Aby Wolf - Movin In

04. Ryan Adams - Karma Police

05. Propagandhi - Less Talk, More Rock

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #117

Perhaps it isn't what you wanted or even what you're looking for...

Well hello again, everybody! Welcome to Flatbasset Radio: Episode #117!

That's right, folks, it's a rare Monday afternoon episode of the show. I had planned on getting the show done on Friday, but I was unfortunately waylaid by a cold, a hockey game, and work. These things happen. Someday they'll pay me to do these shows and then I won't have any more excuses.

If you're a fan of the show you likely know what you're getting into with Episode #117. I've got jams on jams on banter on more jams. Along the way I discuss overrated albums of the 90's, underrated albums of the 90's, trying to do my part to support indie labels, French guitar instrumentals, the resurfacing of the old "Minneapolis Sound," one of my favorite Twin Cities producers, my latest Glaswegian obsession, and plenty more. Of course I also have the Cover Of The Week, a dive into Nate's Archives, a trip in the Minnesota Way-Back Machine, and the Flatbasset Flatclassic.

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #116

Dodging eye contact with anyone who looks my way...

Well hello again, everybody. Welcome to Flatbasset Radio: Episode #116!

Folks, we're back to our regularly scheduled program this week. 13 songs, 62 minutes, some banter, jams on jams...

Before I get to that, however, big big thanks to everybody who made a donation to Secondhand Hounds last week. I was hoping to raise $50 for the Houndoos and we ended up raising $130. Of course I'm happy to send along the Flatbasset Radio: Secondhand Mix to anybody else who'd like to step up to the plate. Just $5 and I'll e-mail two 30 minute mixes as a show of gratitude.

Also, look at that Mixcloud player down below - Yeah, that's the new Flatbasset Radio logo. Pretty damn sexy, eh? A gentleman named Ross Auger of Wet Eyes Productions was kind enough to put that together for me and he knocked it out of the park. If you're ever in need of some graphic design, give him a call.

Alright, on to this week's show. As I was saying, 13 songs, 62 minutes, all the banter you could ever want, all the jams you could ever want. Along the way we discuss a new album from one of St. Paul's finest indie rock bands, some upcoming shows, a long-overdue spotlight for one of Minneapolis' finest guitar players, a Minnesota band that may not be from Minnesota, the softer side of one of pop-punk's angry young men, and the moment an Alternative Nation legend transitioned to a Great American Rock Band. All that plus some anniversaries, the Cover Of The Week, a dip into Nate's Archives, a trip in the Minnesota Way-Back Machine, and, of course, the Flatbasset Flatclassic.
.
As always, Flatbasset Radio is completely free. I've finally set up a decent downloading site, so if you'd like to download Flatbasset Radio: Episode #116 (with all the appropriate iTunes tagging), just click here.

Flatbasset Radio's 25 Most Played Albums: January '18

Well hello again, folks. Welcome to another edition of Album Collage Monthly!

That's right, we're doing another year of this. 2018 has been an exhausting year and we're only a month into it. Deep freeze, snow storm, deep freeze, Super Bowl... What a time to be a Minneapolitan!

In between curling up with my own basset hound for warmth and navigating the National Guardsmen protecting downtown Minneapolis from Eagles fans I managed to listen to a ton of new music this month.

Before we get to the list, big thank you to everybody who checked out the Countdown shows this month as well as Episode #115. Extra big thanks to anybody who took the time to make a donation to Secondhand Hounds and scooped up a copy of Second-Hand Mix #1. I've never tried anything like that before and it warms my heart to see it having a little success. Those hounds are in a tough spot and every little bit helps.

Alright, let's get to the list.

(As always, one "play" equals one song. For example, the new Happy Children album has 7 songs on it, so each time I listen to it front to back it counts as seven "plays." As usual, all stats come from my Last.FM page. Give it a follow if you really want to stay up on what's getting the most plays.)

01. Wet Eyes - Life As Foreign Currency (52 plays)

02. Double Grave - Daydream Demos (49 plays)

03. The Happy Children - Self Help Book (49 plays)

04. Sebadoh - The Sebadoh (46 plays)

05. Various Artists - Unpop 156 (44 plays)

06. Jeremy Ylvisaker - Malibu Hymnal (43 plays)

07. Paul McCartney - McCartney (41 plays)

08. R.E.M. - Reckoning (40 plays)

09. The Magnetic Fields - Distortion (39 plays)

10. Goat - Requiem (39 plays)

11. The Cranberries - Everybody Else Is Doing It So Why Can't We (37 plays)

12. The Mars Volta - The Bedlam In Goliath (37 plays)

13. Fits - All Belief Is Paradise (36 plays)

14. Various Artists - A Very Radical Small Albums Comp (34 plays)

15. Male Bonding - Endless Now (33 plays)

16. The Killers - Wonderful Wonderful (32 plays)

17. Tangletown - Ordinary Freaks (31 plays)

Flatbasset Radio: Second-Hand Mix #1

There's a hundred hearts soar free...

Folks, I'm trying something new on Flatbasset Radio today.

Flatbasset Radio: Second-Hand Mix #1... exists!

Bear with me...

Yesterday was my birthday and, like the music-obsessed introvert that I am, I spent the day inside making new mixes. I put together two half-hour long shows that are only jams, no banter, and, if I do say so myself, they are fantastic.

Why did I do this? Well, that's where you, loyal listeners come in. You see I made these mixes as an incentive to you to indulge me in a birthday wish.

https://secondhandhounds.org/donate/

I made these two shows in hopes that I could convince some of you to donate to the folks at Secondhand Hounds . Just make a donation of at least $5 and I'll either e-mail you the mixes or burn them onto a CD and send them to you. I donated $10 myself and I think it would be awesome if we could get up to at least $50.

Obviously, we're working on the honor system here. The mixes are indeed flame emoji, but $5 ain't much. No need to cheat the system. Just send me a PM and let me know how you'd like these shows delivered and I'll get it going. These shows aren't going up on the Mixcloud page or the blog. They exist solely as a thank you for stepping up and helping out some hounds.

Side A:

01. Big Quarters - Land Of Opportunity
02. Cult Choir - Insomnia Strain
03. Shy Layers - Running
04. Damon Albarn - Seven High
05. Blur - Sweet Song
06. Edison - That Dream Of Falling Face First
07. Paul McCartney - Glasses
08. A-Plus - You Owe It To Yourself
09. Zavala - Cycles To Gehenna
10. Greg Carr - Re-Entry To The Astral Sea
11. Love-Cars - Halloween

Side B:

01. Wet Eyes - Aerial Lawnmower
02. Frank Ocean - In Here Somewhere
03. Iggy Pop - Nightclubbing (Baby Doc Remix)
04. Human Kindness - Katherine Drone
05. Doomtree - English
06. Kool A.D. - Not OK
07. TV On The Radio - Family Tree
08. Greg Carr - Tuning Out
09. Mike Swoop - On My Mind
10. M. Ward - Transfiguration #2

(Quick note to these artists: Lord knows, I'm not making any money here. It's all for charity. Please don't sue me.)

Thanks for listening everybody.
