Flatbasset Radio: Episode #105

I could own her, that crazy loner...

Well hello again, everybody, and welcome back to your regularly scheduled program.

Before we get going here, big thanks to everybody who checked out the last couple of themed episodes. I love doing both the Canada Day show and the American Album Hall Of Fame show, so thank you for indulging me on those.

This week, however, it's back to work. Episode #105 is a show packed with jams. Some local bands, some national bands, a couple of throwbacks, some upcoming shows, some anniversaries, the Cover Of The Week and, of course, the Flatbasset Flatclassic.

Along the way we discuss the best place to meet middle-aged losers, listening to Prince without devolving into reverie, some reunited punk rockers, a knight and his all-American backing band, nostalgia strewn across St. Paul, art and its curious relationship with expectations, Ryan Adams catalogue, some damn fine music journalism, and one of the great Minnesota songs not written by a Minnesota artist.

As always, Flatbasset Radio is completely free. I've finally set up a decent downloading site, so if you'd like to download Flatbasset Radio: Episode #105 (with all the appropriate iTunes tagging), just click here.

If you don't have the time or desire to download the show, just click the Mixcloud player below and you're good to go.

02. Prince - Future Baby Mama

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #104 (American Album Hall Of Fame - Class Of 2017)

Never had to knock on wood...

Well hello again, everybody! Welcome to Flatbasset Radio: Episode #104!

Folks, on Saturday we celebrated some of the finest work coming from our brothers & sisters in the Great White North. Now, I may be a few days late, however, it was just America's birthday which means it's time for my favorite episode of the year. That's right, it's time to induct six new albums into the Flatbasset Radio American Album Hall Of Fame.

Before we get to this year's inductees, let me bombard you with some links to the previous induction ceremonies:

Class Of 2015 (Part I)
Class Of 2015 (Part II)
Class Of 2016 (Part I)
Class Of 2016 (Part II)

Unlike last year's class, which skewed a bit toward Minnesota, this year's class is a celebration of the East Coast. In fact, with the exception of a nod to Boston, the majority of these artists are as ingrained in New York City culture & history as Central Park, Madison Square Garden, criminally underrated bagels, & brutally-overrated pizza.

Before we get to the albums, though, here's a quick reminder of the FRAAHOF's criteria:

01. An album must be at least 10 years old to be inducted into the FRAAHOF

02. Only 6 albums per year may be inducted

03. Only 2 of those 6 albums may have been released over 30 years ago

04. No artist can appear in consecutive years

So, with those criteria in mind, here's a look at this year's inductees:

Hell of a class, no? As per usual, I'll be playing three songs off each of the albums being inducted and talk for far too long about each of them. Sound good? Well, too bad, you get what you pay for.

So, now that you know, here's what the Flatbasset Radio American Album Hall Of Fame looks like as of today:

Alright, let's get to the show.

As always, Flatbasset Radio is completely free. I've finally set up a decent downloading site, so if you'd like to download Flatbasset Radio: Episode #104 (with all the appropriate iTunes tagging), click here for Part 1 & here for Part 2.

Now, let's get to it:

01. Party Pit
02. First Night
03. Stuck Between Stations

04. The Rascal King
05. Another Drinkin' Song
06. The Impression That I Get

07. Peg
08. Deacon Blues
09. Josie

And Part 2 of the Class Of 2017:

01. Someone Great
02. North American Scum
03. All My Friends

04. Tasmanian Pain Coaster (w/The Mars Volta)
05. EMG
06. Poisenville Kids No Wins (w/Cat Power)

Flatbasset Radio's 25 Most Played Albums: June '17

Well, folks, another month's past. With July upon us, it's time to take a look back at which albums were getting the most spins here at Planet New Basset over June, 2017.

Sorry I'm a couple days late with this post. The Canada Day show always conflicts with posting this one on the first of July and honestly, I was just lazy yesterday, so here we are. Big thanks to everybody who's checked out that Canada Day show, though. It's one of my favorite episodes to record each year.

Alright, let's get to the thing.

(As always, one "play" equals one song. For example, that new Mux Mool album has 10 songs on it, so each time I listen to it front to back it counts as ten "plays." As usual, all stats come from my Last.FM page. Give it a follow if you really want to stay up on what's getting the most plays.)

01. Mux Mool - Implied Lines (Deluxe) (70 plays)

02. V/A - ECS 108: Heavy Future (A Compilation) (56 plays)

03. Allan Kingdom - Lines (56 plays)

08. Gorillaz - Humanz (42 plays)

09. Naked Raygun - Throb Throb (42 plays)

11. Gospel Gossip - Sing Into My Mouth (41 plays)

12. The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (40 plays)

13. Ryan Adams - Easy Tiger (39 plays)

Flatbasset Radio: Episode #103 (Canada Day Special!)

Something told me it'll work out...

Well hello again, everybody! Welcome to Flatbasset Radio: Episode #103!

As you can probably tell from the title of this week's show and the flag-draped banner at the top of the post, Flatbasset Radio: Episode #103 is an extra special edition of the show. That's right, folks, it's our annual Canada Day Special!

Making this year's show even more important: July 1st, 2017 marks Canada's Sesquicentennial! That's right, folks, it's been 150 years since Canada officially told England, "We're sorry, but we'd like to be our own country now, if that's OK. Sorry." Good on ya, Canada.

To mark the occasion, I've got 12 jams lined up to celebrate some of the great music that's come from our brothers & sisters to the north. From Abbotsford to Halifax and back again. I've got a little hip-hop, our mid-show electronic break, a few anniversaries, the Cover Of The Week, the Flatbasset Flatclassic, and more power-pop than any show before this. Seriously, it think, after maple syrup, left-hand shot defensemen, and sweet, sweet crude oil, power-pop is probably Canada's most valuable resource.

As always, Flatbasset Radio is completely free. I've finally set up a decent downloading site, so if you'd like to download Flatbasset Radio: Episode #103 (with all the appropriate iTunes tagging), just click here.

If you don't have the time or desire to download the show, just click the Mixcloud player below and you're good to go.

Here's how Episode #103 plays out:

01. A.C. Newman - Encyclopedia Of Classic Takedowns

02. Shad - Telephone

03. Handsome Furs - I'm Confused

04. You Say Party - Nightswimming

05. Death From Above 1979 - Better Off Dead

06. Ryan Hemsworth - (。◕‿◕。) (or, I Want To Stare At Your Face Until I Die)

07. Feist - Brandy Alexander

08. Sloan - Pretty Voice

09. The Stills - Helicopter

10. The Everywheres - Slow Friends

11. Ron Sexsmith - All In Good Time

12. Arcade Fire - Intervention

There you have it, folks! Roll up those rims!
