Well hello again, podcast fans! Welcome to the fourth installment of my short-running MinneClassics series!
Folks, last week marked the 10 year anniversary of the release of P.O.S.'s second full-length album Audition. To mark the occasion I thought I'd devote a few minutes to discussing one of my favorite tracks from this classic album.
Like a lot of people, Audition was just that, a first look at the rapper P.O.S. and the Doomtree collective. It was an introduction to a world that had equal love for both hardcore punk and underground hip-hop and decided that there was no point separating the two. The album is full of highlights, from the aggression of opener "Half-Cocked Concepts," the anger of "The Kill In Me," the straight-banging "Stand Up (Let's Get Murdered)," to spot-on guest spots from Slug, Craig Finn, Greg Attonito & Mike Mictlan, the album more than meets the goal of opening the door to world of Doomtree (a door that, 10 years on, was quickly flooded with like-minded individuals).
However, looking back, "De La Souls" is still the moment when it all comes together. Over a simple beat and autobiographical rhymes, P.O.S. invites us all in by opening up and telling his story. In doing so, he's asking that we respond by telling our own stories. He's inviting everybody to join in not by becoming an anonymous face in a larger movement, but by reaffirming that a group of like-minded individuals is still a group of individuals, with their own hopes, dreams, goals, & disappointments. He's knocking down whatever was left of the wall between performer and audience and extending a hand.

Folks, it's a big day here in beautiful Minneapolis. Rhymesayers Entertainment, pillar of the local music community and the national hip-hop world, is celebrating their 20th anniversary with a big ass show down at the Target Center. It's a celebration, bitches!
As a tribute to all the hard work the label's done over the years, I decided to put together a show celebrating some of my absolute favorites RSE artists. It was a tough show to do, many great songs were left off, but that's a testament to the job they've done over the years. RSE keeps their quality control on point.
So, in this week's show I talk a lot about the importance of the label for all kinds of reasons. Rhymesayers isn't just about the music. In addition to playing the jams I discuss the importance of Rhymesayers as a part of the community, an example of the spirit of independence that runs throughout the midwest, and a testament to the fact that hard work & a belief in the goal can go a long way. Even if you're not a hip-hop fan, it's indisputable that the label's success has provided a blueprint for independent businesses throughout the Twin Cities. It's provided a beacon in a city that prides itself on an independent streak that was burning before RSE existed and will continue to burn after it's gone. Rhymesayers Entertainment is both an institution itself an inextricable link in the chain of the Twin Cities history.

My Album Of The Week for the week of October 28th-November 3rd, 2013:
P.O.S. - WDELH/MDS/RMX
I'm pretty excited about this one. It took me quite a while to come around on P.O.S. We Don't Even Live Here. Considering that his last record, Never Better, I thin it's fair to say that it was initially a disappointment. I've since come around on the record and, to be fair, comparing it to Never Better was never totally fair considering that album was an absolute wrecking ball (never mind the fact that I was living in New York and desperate for something that reminded me of home at the time).
I've also come around a bit on the whole Marijuana Deathsquads experience. Like most people I was pretty confused, initially, by exactly what MDS was all about at the beginning. Fortunately, through a combination of live shows & excessive spins of both their Tamper, Disable, Destroy (the hip-hop one) and Music Rocks I & II (the noisy one), I think I get it now. Both of those albums have been albums of the week before and I've learned that anything under the "Marijuana Deathsquads" label deserves, and rewards, repeated spins.
Like Tamper, Disable, Destroy and Music Rocks I & II, WDELH/MDS/RMX is a free download. Even if you've never heard P.O.S. or the original We Don't Even Live Here you should give this one a few spins.

Welcome to Episode #9 of our weekly Flatbasset Podcast!

participates in our Songs Of The Week column. Since he's typically
kind of a jerk in that column we asked him if he'd like to put
together a weekly podcast to prove that he actually does like music
and, on occasion, has interesting things to say about it. Foolishly,
we also asked him to wish our readers a Happy New Year. So now this

Since this is the first week of the
New Year we asked TCDroogsma to put together a Top 10 list of his
favorite 2012 albums. Not only did he do that, but he also scolds

Chris Martin put Coldplay on hiatus, actually says, “Nobody does

Hello again, Twin Cities hip-hop
fans!
It's been a great year for Twin
Cities hip-hop. Brother Ali, MaLLy, I Self Devine, Big Quarters,
Mike Mictlan... So much good music came out of the cities that it's
almost unfair.
Today, though, we're here to
celebrate the impending release of P.O.S.'s We Don't Even Live
Here, which will hit the
streets this coming Monday.This
will be P.O.S.'s fourth solo album and, we're betting, will be high
on the “Best Of” lists at the end of the year.
More to the
point, to celebrate the release we asked our resident hip-hop junkie
TCDroogsma to put together a little something for us. He came back
with an hour long Flatbasset mix packed with P.O.S. jams.
As you can see,
click the download tab below to download the free mix. Of course we'd like to take a
moment to point out that, obviously, we do not own any of the music
contained in the mix. We asked TCDroogsma to put it together as a
celebration and that's just what he did. So please
don't sue us. We don't have any money anyway.

Y'know, I've been a Doomtree fans for a minute now and I thought it
would be fun to put together a nice run of tracks that P.O.S. has
been featured on rather than a typical “best of” type of thing.
If
you remember, back when Never
Better came out Fifth
Element released a couple of bonus albums called Meat
Tape and Meat
Tape 2 that featured a
bunch of harder to find stuff and stuff that, evidently, P.O.S. was
digging at the time. That was kind of my plan with this mix. Think
of it as Meat Tape 3 or P.O.S. & Friends Rappity Rap Party or I Already Know All These Songs.
It should be noted, of course, that I am not a DJ. If the fades and
blends and such aren't up to par, that's why. Don't think of this
mix as some chopped up, bangin' DJ mix (though, if someone did that
with a bunch of P.O.S. guest spots I'm sure it would kill), think of
this more like the best hour of radio that would never get played on
the radio.
Obviously all of the tracks contain some sort of P.O.S. contribution.
My apologies if I'm not giving full credit to everybody involved.
Be sure to
check out P.O.S.'s new album We Don't Even Live Here, on the
streets October 22nd. He's also playing a record release
show at First Avenue on the 26th. Best believe we're
gonna be there.
